Telcom immunity: I’ll wait to see if the Democrats sold out the constitution again, but I’m willing to bet they did. No politician has any principles during an election year.
Update: Crooks and Liars has more, but it looks like it’s a done deal. These Democrats are not Blue Dogs, they are Blue Cowards. All it takes is the President to say something is legal and game over, you have no rights.
Anything from detaining American citizens, torturing people, to spying on our own population is allowed. All it takes is for a brown shirt government employee to say “War on Terror” and for the President to say “this is legal”. No one is held accountable, no one has to deal with the consequences of their actions.
When the Democrats opposed blanket immunity I was thinking that maybe these dark days are closing. It was all a scam; the Democrats are up for election too.
I’m upset and I can’t wait for January 20th, 2009. Even if it’s McCain at least we’ll get a new king.

You /do/ realize that it was the Bush Administration and the Republicans who have been selling out our rights, torturing people, detaining US citizens and spying on us? You have been in America the last eight years, right?
Or do you think that you’re any different from the Democrats and Republicans in Congress, shifting blame from themselves, when the entire American population is responsible for sitting back and letting Bush’s administration do this?

Blue,
I do realize what’s been going on. How can anyone think otherwise? It’s just that our politicians are so adept at moving the conversation away from the real point.
They don’t argue about torture, they argue about the “legal definition of torture”.
They don’t argue about illegal spying, they argue about “trial lawyers benefiting from frivolous lawsuits”.
They don’t argue about stripping American citizens of their rights, they argue about “who’s really protecting America more”.
And I do think I am different than the Democrats and Republicans in Congress. Those elected officials work for you, me, and the rest of the electorate. They are failing their employee evaluation and as their boss I wish I could hire new people.
Unfortunately most of the other voters are more concerned about getting their guy into office and never mind the rights and wrongs. It’s employment by committee and I’m out voted.
I’m waiting for January 20th but I don’t harbor any illusions. We’ve lost our ability to challenge the government and question them in court. We will never get that back.

I agree. Morality has become a debate, and our elected officials fail us.
But the fact of the matter is that throughout most of this administration, the American people have sat…complacent and uncaring. Yes, of course there are always those who have been speaking out this entire time and been ignored, but the vast amount of Americans either saw it and didn’t care, or saw it, tried to make a difference with their words and gave up.
We’re responsible because the American public has proved that it doesn’t care about corruption–we have no problems electing officials who are in the pockets of those who’s interests are against our own. We have no problem spreading words we know are lies.
That’s why I see myself and you as just as responsible. The only difference, is that these people are our scapegoats–we pay them to blame them for our failures.
*grins* I do think the Republicans are (just for the moment)worse than the Democrats, of course. They’re the ones who actually did these things, which is just a little bit worse than standing by and letting it happen.
