Mostly about my amusement

No need to be competitive

So Lily put the kids to bed and was complaining that they were fighting.

Me: They like to compete with each other. That’s why they fight.

Lily: After a while it drives me crazy.

Me: Did you ever compete with your brother?

Lily: There was no need.

Wow.

What, you don’t say hello anymore?

Sunday morning I had to be in New Jersey before 3 AM to work on powering up the data center there. The company tries to power down it’s data centers once a year to make sure that BCP and DR works.

I got there at 1:30 AM which was okay since we got the building back early and I started my tasks like a crazy person. Except for it being the Memorial Day weekend it was not bad at all. I might volunteer next year for the early shift when we do this again.

When you get to the front door they check that you are on the list and authorized to be there.  They also give you a badge signed by the coordinator that you have to wear. It has your name on it naturally.

After about 10 AM the data center started filling with server and application support staff. I work for Networks and until our equipment is up there is no point in those folks coming in. If they can’t communicate on layer 3 (look it up) then their apps can’t work.

Several times I was stopped and asked/told the following.

  • “Hey Stefan, how’s it going?”
  • “What, you are to good to say hello anymore?”
  • “I don’t understand. Why are you saying your name is Jan?”
  • “WOW. They messed up your first name on your name plate!”

You get the idea. I work in the same team as my identical twin brother and he’s been with the company for about 8 years. Lots of people know him. Even though they are aware that his identical twin brother works here, until it’s spelled out for them they just don’t connect that I’m not him.

Usually I walk back to the person, show them my name plate and explain it to them. I could have a lot of fun with it but by noon I was too tired to play games with people. My co-workers laughed it up though, so it’s all good.

I don’t feel less wise

Extracted Wisdom tooth

I feel the same, but my face sure is swollen. The kids want to know why my face got so fat.

This is the second extraction I’ve had with this dentist (first time was another problem tooth) and each time it’s a tough job. My teeth are too stubborn and it took about an hour to get out all the pieces.

My dentist was pretty cool about when I took out my Nikon and took some pictures; he’s got a Canon model with a ring flash. I’ve got a gruesome picture of the tooth pieces on a plate but I won’t be sharing that one on the Internet.

My dentist did a good job and except for a dull pain, the healing is coming along nicely. Although I can’t wait for my chin to go back to normal.

I’ve had a busy schedule lately and have posts queued for tethering your netbook with your iPhone and what I’m looking for in a new camera. If I get the chance I’ll complete some of that write up tonight.

Kindergarten Hamsters

My daughter’s Kindergarten class has a pet hamster named Bear.  Every Friday, one of the kids in her class gets to take Bear home for the weekend and get to feed and play with her.

Yesterday was my girl’s turn.  Both kids are excited and I have to keep reminding them that Bear is not a toy.  They don’t hurt the hamster but they are kids and they need a grownup to keep the pet in good shape. Now the kids want a hamster for a pet.  That’s not going to happen unless I can get a cat (and since Lily does not want a cat, we remain pet-less).

It’s an interesting experience and I’ll take photos and post them on Flickr.

All my snows remembered

It snowed here Friday, so when I got home I started shoveling before I even went inside.  My driveway is on a slope so if you don’t drive an SUV (I do) then going up the ramp is a problem.

2008 snow thrower

This picture is me 2 years ago when I had some forethought. Friday night I thought of that picture a lot. With some effort I was able to clear the driveway in short order.  It was messy but any car would be able to make it up that ramp.

It all was good afterwards, except Friday night and Saturday morning it snowed again and all my work was for naught.   On top of that, Saturday my back started to hurt.  Today I plan to take it easy and go outside and salt the driveway.  If I can I’ll gas up the snow thrower and see if that helps.

It will be fun but no matter how long it takes I need to clear that driveway.  The kids still have school and my folks need to be able to use their mini van.

Update: Let’s hear it for warmer weather, some rain, and Lily. She and I went out and scraped all the ice off of the driveway.

Driveway with no ice on it

I wanted to stop much sooner but she kept us till my folks car could come and go without touching any ice.

She’s always been much more determined than I am.
